What is capitalism?
-money and resources are privately owned for private profit
-economic decision’s are made by the free market (supply and demand)
-You are rich or poor based on how hard you work
What is socialism?
-supports social equality
-public ownership of money and resources
-rich should share some of there rich with the poor so things are less unequal
(Not pure equality)
What is communism?
-a ideology that aims for a classless and stateless society
-free access to articles of consumption
-no private property or wage labor
-no one can be rich but no one can be poor either
What years were the capitalist (rich or poor based on how hard you work) system going strong? Who suffered in this?

Intellectuals start to question capitalism. In 1847 Karl Marx a German philosopher was apart of an organization called “Communist League”

- Abolition of private property and capitalism
- Private property and capitalism keep workers enslaved

-Free education for all children in public schools and combination of education with industrial production

What’s was the difference between the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks?
The Mensheviks where people who wanted PEACEFUL and LEGAL change and pass communist laws slowly

Why were tensions high in Russia of 1905?
-They lost the Russo-Japanese war in 1904-05
-Major famines
-Russia had bad working conditions in factories
-Censorship (Tsar had full control)
-absolute monarchy :people have no power
What was in January of 1905?
Bloody Sunday
Father Gapon gets a petition of 1500 people to get better working conditions to show the Tsar ….The Tsar sends his military to deal with it thinking it’s a threat…soldiers kill innocent people
What did Bloody Sunday lead to?
The king agrees to a Duma. A form of parliament but has more seats for conservative supporters and the Tsar can dismiss the Duma at anytime

He was a monk who became an advisor to the Romanovs
What happened the day of Nicholas II formal coronation?
He gave out free bread and beer but many where trampled to death and died due to running to the free food
What did the Tsar do in 1915?
He takes personal command of the army in the war… his army is mostly mal nourished peasants with little to no weapons, there’s low morale and many deaths…People just blame the Tsar for the defeats
