When and why did Russia leave the war?
1918, due to international conflict + treaty of Brest-Litovsk
How were the French and Russian revolutions similar? Long term vs short term
Long term: inequality and poor living conditions
Short term: slow to industrialize, failed uprising (Bloody Sunday 1905), Nicholas ll’s ineffective leadership, and failure in war
Why was there two revolutions?
1st reflected frustration with czar
2nd reflected frustration with provisional government, continued failures in war, and food shortages
Who were Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks? What did they promise? What did they want?
Lenin: chairman of the council of people’s for the Soviet Union
Bolsheviks: left faction party run by Lenin
In response to the failures of the provisional government, promised peace and land and bread. They also wanted a Marxist society but different
Who was Marx(ist)?
Communism “guy”
What did Lenin and the Bolshevik’s achieve?
Got Russia out of the war, distributed land, and created the USSR (communist state)
Was the USSR really Marxist?
Kind of, but not really (theory vs practice)
What did Lenin want?
“Profesional revolutions”/ bourgeoisie (boo-shwa-zie) in charge
Who was Joseph Stalin? Was he a communist?
He was in charge of the Soviet Union, and he was a communist but very different in practice vs theory
What was Stalin’s leadership all about?
Industrialization, collectivization (state control of land) which lead to famine, Gulages (forced labor camps), secret police which eliminated political opposition
