Autocracy

Economy problems
-Industrialisation happened alot slower than in western countries.
-only 5% of the land was arable
-agriculture was technologically underdeveloped
-Russia’s coal, steel and oil production doubled from 1890-1900
- very low manufacturing output
-underdeveloped road and railways
Political problems
-one of the remaining autocracies- tsar had total power
-no constitution
- no elected representative assembly
-no democratic process
-tsar governed by decree
- he used censorship
- he used the church
- he used his okhrana to imprison or exile to Siberia
Society problems
Divided into classes:
-aristocracy made up 1%
of population but owned
1/4 /25% of all land
-middle class like
merchants, businessmen,
bankers ect
- peasants made up 80% of
the population, they were
very poor, starved and had
a life expectancy of 40
years
- more than 21 nationalities lived in Russia and all spoke different languages and had different religious beliefs.
