reforms made :
- Emancipation of serfs 1861
- Zemstva, an elected council only in areas that were considered Great Russia
- The army, using the Prussian military system as a model, but proved to be ineffective in the Russo-turkish war.
- Allowed more freedom of press.
- Replaced the third section to the Okhrana, which was to search people who undermine the government.
what is autocracy ?
One person who has absolute power over people, they are ordained by God.
what is a dictatorship ?
Absolute power, usually by one person. They don’t have legal, political, economic or social restrictions.
what is totalitarianism ?
Having control over every aspect of the behaviour of the citizens of the state.
How did the tsars deal with opposition ?
They were effective to an extent. As the Romanov dynasty remained until Nicholas II, he couldn’t handle the pressures with World war one.
Additional, the opposition lacked unity and effectiveness.
How did the provisional government deal with opposition ?
The Bolsheviks came to dominate the opposition. Seized power in October 1917. The Provisional government did little to prevent opposition.
