Q

What is the satisfaction level?

A

Based on the concept of comparison level (CL). A satisfying relationship is judged by comparing rewards and costs and is seen as profitable if it has many rewards and few costs.
However, satisfaction by itself will not be enough to determine the continuation of a relationship.

Q

Why did Rusbult think that the distinction between commitment and satisfaction was important?

A

He argued that commitment rather than satisfaction was the main factor causing people to stay in romantic relationships. It can help explain why people who aren’t satisfied in their relationship choose to stay, ie. because they are committed to their partner.

Q

What were Le and Agnew method?

A

Conducted meta-analysis of Rusbult’s Investment Model of commitment.
Across 52 studies, including 60 independent samples and 11582 participants.

17
Q

What were Le and Agnew’s findings?

A

Satisfaction, alternatives and investment correlated significantly with commitment to the relationship.
These 3 variables collectively accounted for nearly 2/3 of the variance in commitment.
Commitment was found to be a significant predictor of relationship breakup.

18
Q

What were Rusbult and Martz (1995) method?

A

Applied the investment model to abusive relationships.
Asked women living in refuges why they had stayed with their abusive partners instead of leaving them as soon as the abuse began.

19
Q

What did Rusbult and Martz (1995) find?

A

As predicted by the model, women had felt the greatest commitment to their relationship when their economic alternatives were poor and their investment was great.
