Rural - Areas to Revise Flashcards
what is diversification?
farmers who cannot make enough income from farming alone may diversify to other areas such as recreation/tourism to make additional profit
gave 6 examples of ways in which farmers in DEVELOPED countries can diversify
selling farmland for housing developments, tourism - renting out cottages as holiday homes, recreational opportunities e.g. fruit picking, sports e.g. quad biking, additional enterprise e.g. ice cream, farm tours, music festivals
give some examples of farmers diversifying in the developed world
Mackie’s ice cream is an example of farmers diversifying into other enterprises which started in Aberdeenshire and is now a successful international corporation, Craigie’s Farm offers fruit picking, Glastonbury festival,
give 6 disadvantages of farmers diversifying in the DEVELOPED world
influx of tourists can have huge negative impact on the environment e.g. walkers may cause footpath erosion, tourists may litter, stone walls could be broken if climbed over, tourists’ cars may cause congestion + pollution in rural areas, tourist facilities e.g. campsites may spoil natural look of the countryside. Some activities may also be seasonal e.g. fruit picking
what was the CAP
common agriculture policy - encouraged farmers to grow as much produce as possible with the promise that the EU would buy it all
effects of the CAP
created an abundance of produce e.g. butter, also caused a destruction of animals’ habitats as farms expanded
what happened as a result of the CAP
the policy change and farmers were paid to set aside land and not grow anything on it, farmers were also given subsidies to preserve woodland + hedgerows in an attempt to preserve animals’ natural habitats
advantages of growing biofuels
reduces the amount and cost of oil India has to import. growing Jetropha is labour intensive and provides jobs
disadvantages of growing biofuels
uses land which could be used for crops. uses a lot of water.
