  1. Diversification: generating income through non-farming acts.
  2. New technology: using machinery, chemicals and irrigations.
  3. Organic farming: growing crops without using chemicals.
  4. GM food: crops derived from scientifically altered seeds.
  5. Current government policy.

Explain what is diversification and give examples.

A

Diversification is generating income from doing non-farming activities. Examples of diversification include:

  • renting out cottages as holiday homes
  • running bed and breakfast facilities
  • setting up camp and caravan sites
  • opening petting farms
  • organising educational tours
  • setting up cafes
  • selling local produce in farm shops
  • offering adventure activities such as quad biking, paintball and pony trekking.
