Rules Of Thumb Flashcards
When should you start rolling out of a turn to make your desired heading?
Halve your angle of bank and start rolling out that many degrees before you desired heading.
Example:
Turning from 090° to 180° in a 20° AoB
Start recovering at 170°
When should you start leveling off in a climb/descent to hit your desired altitude?
Start leveling off at the number of feet equal to 10% of your FPM
Example:
You are climbing to 4000ft at 500 fpm
10% of 500 is 50
Start leveling off at 3950ft
How many RPM equals 5KT speed change?
100RMP
If at 2300RPM and 105KTs and you want to descend at 500fpm and 85KTs, how much RPM do you need to reduce?
900RPM
When doing a timed turn when should you start the timer?
As the aircraft is rolled
When leaning the mixture using an EGT guage, best economy is ____
peak EGT temp
If you are flying at 6500 and you know the circuit height is 1500ft AGL, how long will it take you to descend at 500ft/min?
5000 ft difference so it will take you ten minutes to descend to 1500ft from 6500ft.
If you know your GS, you can calculate how far out you need to start your descent
120kts GS = 2NM/min
2x10=20NM out is when you should start your descent
