What is the general rule of plurals?
Add -s to the singular form
If the word ends with -l, what do you do?
Drop the -l and add -is
If the word ends with -l, but the last syllable is not stressed, what do you do?
Drop -l, add -eis
If the word ends with -s, or -x, and the last syllable is not stressed, what do you do?
The plural is identical to the singular form
If the word ends in -m, what do you do?
Drop the -m, and add - ns
If the word ends in a consonant, what do you do?
Add -es
If the word ends with -ão, and the last syllable is not stressed, what do you do?
Add -s
If the word ends with -ão, and the last syllable is stressed, what do you do?
Either add:
1. -s
2. -ões (most common for words ending with -ão)
3. ães (least common for words ending with -ão)
