Three classes of verb (based on endings?)
Examples:
“-are”: parlare (talk), entrare (enter) and nuotare (swim)
“-ere”: scrivere (write), leggere (read) and vedere (see)
“-ire”: costruire (build), seguire (follow) and colpire (hit)
The infinitive?
Infinitive (simplest) e.g. swim (what you’ll find in a dictionary)
Tenses and forms of verbs
Present
- present tense
- Present perfect tense (I have eaten)
Past
- Imperfect tense (I used to)
- Perfect tense (I have done)
- the past historic (I ate, less common than perfect when referring to past)
Future
- Future tense (I will eat)
Imperative (used when giving orders) e.g. don’t be late, tell me about your new boyfriend
Conditional (things that would or could be)
- I would, could, should
Subjunctive
Essere vs stare
Essere = states a quality e.g. I am strong
Stare = states a willingness e.g. I am trying
