Word root (WR)
The basic core or foundation of a word
Combining vowel (CV)
Follows many word roots and can include a, e, I, o, u, or y
Combining Form (CF)
A word root followed by a slash and a vowel altogether
When adding a word part that begins with a consonant to a word root
The combining vowel is retained or continued
When adding an additional word root that starts with a vowel
The combining vowel from the first word root is usually retained
Prefix (P)
Used at the beginning of a word to change the meaning of the word
Suffix (S)
Used at the end of a word either to finish off the word or to change the meaning of the word; begins with a vowel, it is usually added directly to the word root (CV is usually deleted)
A compound word
When two or more word roots are combined to form a new word
Adjective
Describes a noun; pertaining to; generally comes before the WR it describes
Endings: as, al, ic, ac, and ar, ous
Noun
Person, place, or thing
Endings: ia, um, aly, alus, e, is, y, us
