Rules for Naming Organic Molecules Flashcards
1
Q
Step 1
A
Find the longest chain with the functional group on it
2
Q
Step 2
A
Number the chain from the end that gives the functional group the smallest number
3
Q
Step 3
A
If the functional group is not on the end carbon chain then you have to add the number within the name (eg. but-2-ene)
4
Q
Step 4
A
Don’t forget to add the side chains on the carbon number it says (eg. 2, methyl - means a CH₃ comes off carbon 2 or 2, 3 dimethyl - means CH₃ comes off carbon 2 and 3)
5
Q
Step 5
A
If any of these, Chloro (Cl), Fluoro (Fl), Bromo (Br), Iodo (I), Amino (NH₂), Hydroxy (OH), are attached to say an alkene or a carboxylic acid, write something like this: CH₃CH(OH)CH₂COOH or CH₃CH₂CH(NH₂)CHCH₂
