If it is not possible to get the electricity switched off immediately, how would you attempt to rescue someone who is in contact with a live rail?
- cover your hands with something which is dry and will not conduct electricity,
- stand on dry non-conducting material,
Who is allowed to travel in a driving cab other than train crew who are working the train they are booked to work?
- people with the correct cab passes,
- employee in connection with their duties that is route learning,
If you have placed detonators on the line at what distance would you stand away from the detonators?
30 meters
What is a position of safety if the maximum speed of trains is 100mph or less?
4 feet (1.2m)
If you have to walk line side for any reason, how often should you look up and check for approaching trains so you can reach a position of safety in good time?
Every 5 seconds.
What must you do immediately after a train accident?
Switch on the hazard warning lights and display a red forward light.
If after contacting the signaller after a train accident and he informs you that signal protection has been provided. What must you do next?
- place TCOC on every other line obstructed,
- also on the line on which your train is standing if the whole train has been derailed,
When must you carry out emergency protection after a train accident?
- the signaller cannot provide signal protection,
- you cannot contact the signaller,
When carrying out emergency protection. What lines should you protect first?
- protect other lines,
- protect line your train is on,
What is emergency detonator protection?
3 detonators at 1 and 1/4 mile from obstruction.
If there was a fire on your train, where would you NOT stop?
- in a tunnel,
- on a viaduct,
If your train becomes divided, what must you check?
- the coupling to see if there is any damage,
- if there any damage to Lineside equipment,
If the two portions cannot be recouped and you have to leave the rear portion in the section, what are your actions?
- place 3 detonators 300 yards from both ends of the rear portion,
- tell the signaller the exact location of the rear portion you will leave behind,
Your train fails in service. What are you required to tell the signaller assistance is needed?
- exact location of your failed train,
- the type of assisting train needed,
- the direction from which assistance is needed,
- that the failed train will not be moved unless instructed by signaller,
What is standard assistance protection?
You must place 3 detonators 20 meters apart 300 meters from your train in the direction from which assistance will approach.
Where do you wait until the assisting engine arrives?
- 30 meters from detonators, displaying a hand danger signal to the driver of the assisting engine when it approaches.
If you notice a build-up of flood water that might affect the passage of trains, when would you report this?
- immediately, stopping your train specially to do so.
The signaller has I formed you that will pass a portion of line that has water at the bottom of the rail head and you can continue at normal speed. When you get to the location the water is now above the rail head and is moving and could possibly be dislodging ballast. What would you do?
Stop immediately and report your findings to the signaller and wait for instructions.
When would normal running be suspended due to a build-up of snow?

When would you not require Single Line Working Ticket when working be Pilotman?
- to assist a failed train,
- to remove a portion of a divided train,
During single line working by Pilotman what is the maximum speed while working wrong direction movements?
50 mph
When not accompanied by the Pilotman what do you do with the ticket when single line working no longer applies?
As soon as possible, cancel the ticket by writing CANCELLED across it and hand in to manager
Under what circumstances will working by Pilotman be introduced on single and bi-directional lines?
- the token has been lost,
- the signalling equipment has failed or is disconnected,
- track circuit failure,
- level crossing equipment has failed,
- the token machine has failed,
