What are the requirements prior to carrying out any shunting movement

A
  • Ensure a clear understanding has been obtained for the movement from the depot operator/ yard co and driver
  • the vehicle is safe to move by checking signals, depot protection and all points are set and secure before the movement commences.
  • that no wheels/bogies are fouling any points trailing to the movement
  • ensure the train is stopped at the correct car market/ stopping point and clear of all required points prior to commencing any return movement.

How must a propelling movement be controlled

A
  • the yard co must be precede the movement on foot
  • if this is not practical, the yard co may ride in the front vehicle. However, the emergency brake must be operation in the front vehicle, and communication with the driver via radio communications must be available

How would you identify a unit that was not able to Couple to a compatible traction unit type?

A

It would have a non multi label located on the non driving side window, and on the class 170, it will be located on the panel below the safety isolation switches
