Definite article L’
Used before all singular nouns, masculine and feminine, starting with a vowel or a mute H. The -e or -a of the definite article is dropped. When the noun starts with H, pronounce the vowel that follows H.
Le, La and L’
Le is used with masculine nouns beginning with a consonant, la is used with feminine singular nouns beginning with a consonant, L’ is used with both M and F singular nouns beginning with a vowel.
The letter H
H is silent in French. Words starting with h are pronounced beginning with the first vowel.
