Rule 23-25 Flashcards
Power driven vessels underway shall exhibit these lights (Rule 23):
- Masthead light forward
- Second masthead light abaft & higher on vessels < 50m
- Sidelights
- A sternlight
Air cushioned vessel in non-displacement mode shall exhibit these lights (Rule 23):
- Masthead light forward
- Second masthead light abaft & higher on vessels < 50m
- Sidelights
- A sternlight
- An all-around flashing yellow light
WIG craft only while taking off, landing & in-flight near the surface shall exhibit these lights (Rule 23):
- Masthead light forward
- Second masthead light abaft & higher on vessels < 50m
- Sidelights
- A sternlight
- High intensity all-around flashing red light.
Power driven vessel <12m may exhibit these lights (Rule 23):
- All-around white light
- Sidelights (If practicable)
Power driven vessel underway - Canadian Mods - (Rule 23 - Part d)):
Does not apply to Canadian power-driven vessels or vessels in Canadian waters.
In the waters of the GLB, Power driven vessels underway may carry, instead of the second masthead light & sternlight prescribed in part a)
- In position of the 2nd masthead light, a single all-round white light or
- 2 such lights placed <800mm apart horizontally on either side of the keel
Power driven vessel towing shall exhibit these lights (Rule 24):
- 2 masthead lights in a vertical line for tows <200m. For tows >200m, 3 masthead lights in a vertical line.
- Sidelights
- A sternlight
- Towing light in a vertical line above the sternlight
- For a length of tow >200m, a diamond shape where best seen
Pushing vessel & vessel being pushed ahead (Rule 24):
When rigidly connected rigidly in a composite unit, shall be regarded as a single power-driven vessel & exhibit the lights as such
Power driven when pushed ahead, not a composite unit shall exhibit these lights (Rule 24):
- 2 masthead lights in a vertical line
- Sidelights
- A sternlight
Vessel or object being towed, other than those in part g) shall exhibit (Rule 24):
- Sidelights
- A sternlight
- When LOT (length of tow) >200m, a diamond shape where best visible
A vessel being pushed ahead, not part of a composite unit shall exhibit (Rule 24):
Sidelights at the forward end
Vessel being towed alongside shall exhibit (Rule 24):
- A sternlight
- at the forward end, sidelights
Inconspicuous or partially submerged vessel or object being towed shall exhibit (Rule 24):
- <25m in breadth - one all-round white light, at or near the forward & aft end, except for dracones
- > 25m in breadth - 2 additional all-round white lights at or near the extremities
- > 100m in length, additional all-round white lights so the spacing between all the lights is < 100m
- A diamond shape at or near the aft end, if LOT >200m, another diamond where best seen on the forward end.
If it is impracticable for a barge being towed to comply within Canadian waters shall exhibit (Rule 24-canadian mods):
- 1 all-round white light
- or if 2 or more barges together - May carry 1 all-round white light at the aft of each group
- if length of the group >100m & is lit as in 2, an all-round white light as close to the middle of the group
In the GLB, a power driven vessel shall exhibit (Rule 24- Canadian mod):
- 2 towing lights in a vertical line instead of the sternlight
- Special flashing light at the forward end of the vessel/s being pushed ahead in addition to the other lights required
Within Canadian waters, log tows shall exhibit (Rule 24- Canadian mod):
- <25m in breadth- one all-round white light at or near forward & aft end
- <25m in breadth but >100m in length - An additional all-round white light at the middle
- 25+m in breadth - 4 all-round white lights, one on each corner
- 25+m in breadth & >100m in length - An additional all-round white light at middle on either side
Sailing vessels underway shall exhibit (Rule 25):
- Sidelights
- A sternlight
- <20m, the lights may be combined into a combination lantern near the top of the mast
- May exhibit red all-round light over green all-round light in a vertical line
- <7m if cannot comply, must have a white hand-held light
A vessel under oars shall exhibit (Rule 25):
- The lights prescribed for sailing vessels
- If not, must have a white hand-held light
Vessels motor sailing shall exhibit (Rule 25):
- All lights prescribed for a sailing vessel underway
- Conical shape, apex down where best visible
Vessels motor sailing shall exhibit (Rule 25-Canadian mod):
- All lights prescribed for a sailing vessel underway
- If <12m, must not exhibit the cone of shame.
