Congenital rubella
Mother - infected in T1
T1 <8wks - 85% infected
T1 <12wks - 50 to 80% infected
T2/>19wks - low risk
Neonate: BELLA BABY
1. Microcephaly
2. Enchephelitis
3. Cataracts
4. Deafness
5. BLUE BERRY MUFFIN RASH - extra medullary hemopoesis
6. PDA, pulm artery stenosis
7. Hepatospleenomegaly, Jaundice
8. Toga family virus
Serology/antibodies of rubella in pregnant women
IgG: (good anyway)
Positive - antibodies for rubella present
Negative - no infection
IgM:
Positive - recent infection (>7days)
Negative - repeat in 2-3wks
Only sure of no infection if both are negative
*but repeat after 2 wks
Diagnosis of rubella:
1. IgM+
OR
2. IgG rise x4times
Mx of rubella
No rx, only vaccine (live) present
Vaccination - before 3 months of pregnancy
