- Physical barrier to salivary contamination of the root canal system

What are the patient management advantages of rubber dam?
- Avoids need for continued rinsing of mouth

Dark rubber dam provides good contrast with white tooth structure
Useful when working at the gingival margin
What are the disadvantages of rubber dam?
- Gingival damage from clamps
- Fracture of porcelain restorations
- Fracture of heavily restored teeth
- Fracture or loss of restoration
- Inhalation or swallowing of clamps
- Contact allergy to rubber dam if it contains latex.
