You should be able to recognise how the writer uses techniques to grab the reader’s attention and get them engaged, for example:
Starting with a well-known saying or phrase or a rhetorical question.
Making a statement that deliberately tries to shock or challenge.
A humorous statement.
Using techniques like alliteration or metaphor.
The introduction can also set out what the key points of the passage will be.
evaluate conclusions in a text
The conclusion of a piece of writing can:
Sum up the writer’s overall theme or idea.
Highlight the main points of the text.
Draw together the key ideas to form a conclusion.
Round the article off with a final idea or thought.
You should be able to recognise how the writer uses techniques to round the article off effectively and finish strongly, for example:
metaphor
rhetorical question
humour
anecdote
evaluate language techniques in a text
You need to be able to say why particular language techniques such as word choice, sentence structure, imagery is effective (ie, why they have been used well).
In the following text, look at how the writer uses descriptive techniques to create a vivid setting for the reader and how the weather reflects the mood of the text.
The ground crumbled like sand under my feet as I heaved another step towards the summit. Looking below, the trees were dots to my squinting eyes in the midday heat. Beating down upon my back, the sun was relentless as I wiped the drips of salty sweat from my neckline. The silence of the chasm below was deafening.
Analysis
The writing opens with a simile to show the texture of the ground. The sun is personified as it is described as ‘relentless’, giving it a ruthless personality. The silence is described as ‘deafening’, an oxymoron that helps to emphasise how unbearable the situation is for the character. These descriptive techniques allow the reader to feel as if they are there and pulls them into the story.
