How to answer: Own Word Questions
- Highlight key points in question that signal what you need to do
- highlight key phrases in passage that helps
- put into own words. Make sure amount written corresponds with mark allowance
- use bullet points
How to Answer: Summarising
- skim the paragraph for the most important/relevant points
- underline the key words/phrases
- bullet point the main ideas
How to answer: Linking Questions
- quote phrase from the link sentence that refers back to the previous argument
- Summarise in own words they key idea of the previous argument
- quote the phrase from the link sentence that links forward to the new idea and state that it links forward
- summarise in own words the key idea of the new argument
“However” (turning point)
“But” (turning point)
“Furthermore” (development of an idea etc.)
How to answer: word choice questions
- quote the word or phrase
- identify the technique as word choice
- explain the words decoration (the literal meaning)
- explain the words connotations (how it links to the passage)
- link back to the question
How to answer: imagery questions
- identify the image used + quote (usually one word for metaphor or personification)
- Explain what the image literally means (use the phrase JUST AS…)
- Link analysis to writer’s intended/figurative meaning and explain how this answers the question (use the phrase SO THIS SUGGESTS…)
How to answer : Structure questions
- quote the word of phrase
- identify the technique
- explain the general effect of the technique
- explain the specific effect of the technique in context
- link your answer back to the question
Analysis of a list
Emphasise the vast variety of number of something for effect
NOTE: always explain what is in the list
Analysis of parenthesis
Adds additional information
NOTE: always explain what the additional information is
Analysis of a short sentence
Changes pace or emphasises writers point
Analysis of repetition
Used for emphasis; usually for dramatic effect or to strengthen argument
Analysis of inversion
A sentence is inverted if the word order is unusual.
Used to emphasise one of the words in the sentence

Analysis of colons
Introduce something. They can introduce:
- a list
- a quotation
- an expansion
- an explanation
- a definition
They DO NOT: add information, tell us anything, gives us details, etc.
Analysis of a semi-colon
Separate long items in a list
-join closely related independent clauses. These could be sentences in their own right, but can be connected by a semi-colon if they are related in meaning.
Analysis of a dash
Separate off parts of a sentence. Pairs of dashes can enclose parenthesis. ( - )
Analysis of hyphens
Join two words to create a compound word
E.g man-eating
