How do you answer context questions?
A
- Write down meaning of word
- Quote words or expressions that helped you understand the meaning
- Explain how the meaning of the quoted words or expressions helped you work out the meaning

A
- Quote from the link sentence which refers to the ideas of the previous paragraph
- Show understanding of the ideas of the previous paragraph (links back/refers to…)

A
Show understanding by explaining writer’s ideas in own words. Use bullet points.

A
- Quote the word
- Explain its denotation (literal meaning)
- Explain its connotations and what these add to the text

How do you answer sentence structure questions?
A
- Identify and quote the sentence structure feature (e.g. length, type or punctuation).
- Explain why it is effective in this context and what it adds to the text

- Identify and quote the type of image (e.g. metaphor, simile or personification)
- Explain what is being compared to what (literal meaning)
- Explain why the comparison is effective in this context and what it adds to the text

A
- Identify a feature of language used (e.g. word choice, imagery, sentence structure)
- Quote the example
- Explain it using tactics appropriate to the language feature chosen

A
- Make a point about how effective you think it has been
- Quote something you think is effective
- Explain why it is effective (like analysis) while using words such as ‘successful’, ‘effective’ or ‘powerful’

How do you answer the final question?
A
- Identify essential/key ideas and areas in both passages that are common to both.
- List these as headings
- Under each heading, explain the views of the writer by using brief quotes. Use words such as ‘however’, ‘in contrast’ or ‘similarly’ when comparing views of the writers.
