RS11 - Experimental designs Flashcards
Between groups design
independent measures - each subject pp’s in one condition.
Within groups design
repeated measures - each subject takes part in all experimental conditions
Mixed design
mixture of between and within groups design
True experimental designs
post-test/control, pre-test/post-test design or solomon four group design
Post-test / control group design
Groups are subjected to different conditions and then measured. Random allocation
Pre-test / post-test control group
Groups are measured before and after the conditions
Solomon four group design
Two groups measured before and after while two groups only measured after. Ensures groups are comparable and that pre-testing hasn’t affected performance.
Quasi experiments
- One group post-test design
- One group pre-test / post-test design
- Interrupted time-series design
- Non-equivalent control groups
One group post-test design
One group involved - measured after the task. No comparison group.
One group pre-test / post-test design
One group measured before and after the condition. No control group
Interrupted time-series design
Samples taken from one group on multiple occasions and check that substantial changes coincide with intervention.
Non-equivalent control groups
lacks random assignment - cannot be certain that groups are comparable.
Developmental designs
- Cross sectional research design
- Longitudinal design
- Subsequential designs
Cross sectional research design
Collect data at one time point from pp’s in different conditions
Longitudinal design
Collection of data from same sample of pp’s on at least 2 occasions
