Adalat
The idea that God is just. One of the five roots of faith in Shi’a Islam.

Everlasting life after death in Islam.
Al-Qadr
Islamic belief that Allah already knows everything that will ever happen in the universe.
Angel Jibril
The Angel regarded as the bringer of good news, who passed on the Qur’an to the Prophet Mohammad.
contradictory
Opposing or opposite.
Day of Judgement
The last day, when God judges all of humanity according to how they have lived.
Hadith
The sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, as remembered and recounted by those close to him.
idolatry
The worship of an idol, object or person instead of God.
imam
A Muslim religious figure who leads the communal prayer and is also a leader in the local community and mosque. In Shi’a Islam, the title is given to a line of descendants of Muhammad (twelve in all) who are believed to be exemplary human beings.
immanence
The belief in many religions that God is immanent - ‘in the world’. God acted in history in the past and continues to be active today.
Injil
The revelation received from God by Isa (called Jesus in Christianity).
Ka’aba or Ka’bah
The cube-shaped building in the centre of Makkah (Mecca), which is the most sacred site in Islam.
khalifah
Successor; inheritor; representative custodian; vice-regent. In the Qur’an, Adam is called the khalifah of God, and Muslims believe that humans are God’s khalifahs on Earth - an important concept in the Islamic religion.

The Arabic word for angels, used in the Qur’an.

Prophets chosen by Allah to deliver his message to humanity.

All-powerful.

Belief in more than one God.

Someone believed to give messages from God.
Psalms
A book in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) containing songs of praise and worship.
Qurʾan (Koran)
The Recitation or Reading. Allah’s eternal utterance revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Jibril as his final revelation to humankind.
resurrection (Islam)
In Islam the belief that on the last day all humankind will be raised from their graves to face judgement before Allah.

When something that was previously hidden becomes known. In religions such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism it may be the sending down of God’s word in the form of a teaching or a person.
Risalah
Arabic for ‘message’, this is the belief that Allah chose special people to communicate his word to humanity.

The scrolls of Ibrahim (Abraham), also known as ‘suhuf’. These are now believed by Muslims to be lost but contained God’s revelations to the Prophet Ibrahim.

Division of the Qur’an (114 in total).
tawhid
The belief in the oneness of Allah. It is acknowledged in the First Pillar of Islam: There is no god but God.
Tawrat
Known by Jews as the Torah, Muslims believe it was revealed by God to Musa (Moses). It contains the Ten Commandments.
Ten Commandments
The list of rules, revealed by God to Moses, found in the Old Testament books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. Also known as the Decalogue.
Torah
Law; teaching. The word Torah can be used in a narrow sense to mean the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (The Five Books of Moses) and also in a wider sense to include the whole of the Hebrew Bible and the Talmud.
transcendent
Belief that God is above and beyond creation and it is up to humans to act on His behalf and do His will.
Trinity
Three persons in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Zabur
A holy book of Psalms believed to have been revealed to the Prophet Dawud (David).
