Q

Suffering builds Christian character. Discuss.

A

I think this is partly true because:
People learn from difficult experiences in their lives. For example when someone dies other people have to take on the role that the dead person held and this causes the person to learn a new role even though learning it might be a difficult experience for them.
On the other hand, suggesting God planned all along that the world would involve suffering means that the problems that were a result of the choices that Adam and Eve made were inevitable and that goes against the idea that humans have free will.

Q

Suffering is punishment for our sins. Discuss.

A

In some cases people choose to ignore God’s advice on how to live their lives and then suffer negative consequences due to the choices they have made. For example, some people regularly ignore the verse in the Proverbs that says that you should not drink too much and get drunk and then end up with a drinking problem that effects their lives and their family’s lives.

Q

Evil is due to an abuse of free will. Discuss.

A

Having freewill means that when we choose to do things God’s way we do it because we want to and not because we have to. But people don’t always choose to do things God’s way. sometimes they suffer for it but sometimes other people suffer for it. For example, if a person chooses not to follow the law of the land as instructed in Titus 3:1 and speeds and then hits a person and kills them, they will probably suffer guilt but the person who died’s family will also suffer because of the speeders freewill.
