Pentateuch
Bible
it is called the Torah or Law because it contains God’s laws given through Moses.
Pentateuch
This event is central to Israel’s history as they gain freedom
- The most important event here is the parting of the Red Sea
- It is where the 10 commandments are
Exodus
Emphasizes God’s holiness and how His people should worship and live to maintain their relationship with “the holy God of Israel.
Leviticus
- Covers Israel’s 40-year journey from Mount Sinai to the promised land called Canaan or Cana
- Highlights their struggles, fears, rebellions, and God’s persistent care.
Numbers
shows Moses’ unwavering devotion despite challenges.
Deuteronomy
Tells us the story before the patriarchs came, covers the creation story and early human history. Like Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, and the Tower of Babylon
Primeval History
tells us the early ancestors of Israelites.
Begins with Abraham, the father of faith. Follows his son Isaac, grandson Jacob (Israel), and Jacob’s twelve sons. Highlighting Joseph, who brings Jacob’s family to Egypt.
Patriarchal History
God creates light, separating day and night.
Day 1
God creates the sky to separate waters above and below.
Day 2
God forms land, sea, and vegetation.
Day 3
God creates the sun, moon, and stars to mark time
Day 4
God creates sea creatures and birds.
Day 5
God creates land animals and human beings, giving them dominion over the earth.
Day 6
God rests, blessing and setting apart the seventh day.
Importance:
Day 7
Sarah’s slave and mother of Ishmael, Abraham’s firstborn. She fled but was told by an angel to return.
Hagar
Abraham’s wife, who miraculously gave birth to Isaac at age 90.
Sarah
Abraham’s son through Sarah. He continued God’s covenant. married Rebecca, and had twin sons: Esau and Jacob.
Isaac
He is the son of Hagar and Abraham, brother of saac.
Ishmael
Isaac’s elder son, known for being hairy. He sold his birthright to Jacob for food and later had his blessing stolen.
Esau
Chosen by God to carry on the covenant. He had four wives and twelve sons, who became the Twelve Tribes of Israel
Jacob (Israel)
A charismatic leader who invited all the tribes to victory against the Canaanites, although only half of them responded. Alongside her was her commander Barak.
Deborah
from the tribe Manasseh, after he received a sign he reduced his army to only 300 men, and defeated the Transjordans (Midianites and Amalekites)
Gideon
Made a vow to sacrifice by burning the first person he saw after victory, which tragically ended up being his daughter
Jephthah
Known for his great strength from his hair, he was deceived by Delilah, captured by the Philistines, but in the end his hair grew back then destroyed their temple of their god Dagon.
Samson
Delivered Israel from eight years of oppression by the king of Mesopotamia.
Othniel
Freed Israel from the Moabites
Ehud
Killed 600 Philistines and saved Israel
Shamgar
four major judges:
Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah. Samson
minor judges:
Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar
- Describes the creation of the universe and humanity.
- Explains the beginning of sin, suffering, and God’s way of dealing with people.
