Baptism
Means to ‘immerse in water’. A sacrament which is a rite of initiation to become a member of the church.
Christians baptise with water to symbolise washing away of original sin.
Bible
Christian sacred text believed by Christians to be inspired or revealed by God.
The Bible is divided into the Old and New Testament and guides Christians on how to live.
Conformation
Derived from the term for ‘strengthening’. A sacrament which is a rite for someone who was baptised as an infant to confirm their Christian beliefs.
Christians believe at confirmation they become a full member of the church.
Eucharist
Means ‘thanksgiving’. Re-enacts the Last Supper, a sacrament of sharing bread and wine as a reminder of the body and blood of Christ.
Jesus asked his disciples to remember him in this way.
Free will
The ability to make our own choices (usually moral choices) voluntarily and independently – nothing is pre-determined.
Some Christians believe Adam and Eve were given free will by God and this could explain the existence of moral evil in the world.
Heaven and Hell
Heaven a place/state in the afterlife for those who accepted God’s teachings and grace.
Hell a place/state of punishment in the afterlife for those that rejected God’s teachings and grace in this life.
Christians believe that heaven is a place to be with God. Hell is an absence of God.
Judgement
The belief that God will judge whether or not humans are worthy to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
Many Christians believe there will be a Day of Judgement where God will judge the living and the dead.
Marriage symbols
Features of the wedding ceremony that indicate the purpose and meaning of marriage.
Christians exchange rings as a symbol of eternal love.
Pilgrimage
A journey made to a sacred place as an act of worship or devotion.
Christians may visit Jerusalem to see where Jesus died.
Reason
The process of logical thought or the ability to think in a logical way.
St Aquinas argued that our sense of reason came from God.
Revelation
The way God choses to make himself known to humans.
The Bible is seen as a revelation.
Vows
Promises made between people or a person’s promise to God.
Christians make wedding vows such as ‘Till death us do part.’
Ummah
Means community. Refers to the worldwide community of Muslims who share a common religious identity.
Muslims believe everyone in the
ummah is equal in the eyes of Allah.
Prophet
A messenger of Allah with a special purpose.
The Qur’an states there are 25
prophets, starting with Adam.
Muhammad
The final prophet in Islam, referred to as
the ‘Seal of the Prophets’.
Muhammad had the Qur’an revealed
to him.
Mosque
Means place of prostration. A Muslims place of worship.
Muslims worship at the mosque as a
community, particularly on Friday
(Jummah).
