Sex before marriage - Christian view
Sex is a gift from God and should only be done in the union of marriage
A child’s most secure environment for being brought up is where the mum and dad are married
(corinthians 6:18): Flee from sexual immorality. God Spirit dwells within you, so honour God with your body
Ten Commandments: “do not commit adultery” - sex with anyone but your wife/husband is wrong and breaks trust
(Mark 10:6-8) having sex makes and individual to become “one flesh” - sex creates a very strong bond which should only be reserved for a marriage partner
Sex before marriage - liberal christian view
“Thou shall not judge”
All people are created in the image of God and should therefore have the freedom to do what they desire
Sex before marriage - muslim view
Sex should happen within marriage - married partners are supposed to meet each other’s including that of sexual needs
(Qu’ran 17:32) “Do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed it is an immortality and is evil as a way”.
Contraception - Christian (catholic) views
Sex should lead to producing children as God commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply
Influenced by theologian Thomas Aquinas - argued humans should have 5 primary purposes on earth; one of which was procreation
He turned these into rules called the ‘primary precepts’.
Rules which he made to help these primary precepts are called ‘secondary precepts’ one of which is ‘do not use contraception’
The catholic church follows these precepts and believe artificial contraception is immoral
Contraception - Christian (CofE) views
Contraception can be used well to manage family size
The Bible doesn’t say anything about contraception
It shouldn’t be used to encourage promiscuity - sex is still best within marriage
Contraception - Muslim views
Argue it can be used, as long as it is non-permanent
Some hadiths indicate that the Prophet Muhammad acknowledged birth control and used it
Both the man and the woman should agree to use it within the union of marriage
Same sex relationships - Christian view
Believe sexual relations should only exist between a man and a woman otherwise procreation is not possible
(Leviticus 20:13) If a man has sexual relations with a man it detestable.
Adam and Eve were created as a man and a woman
Same sex relationships - liberal christian view
Seen as acceptable as the relationship is loving and committed because the Bible states “thou shall not judge”
All people are created in God’s image and have the freedom to do what they desire
God was loving
Pope called them “disordered” and perverse
Same sex relationships - Muslim view
Forbid same sex marriage - sex should only take place between and man and a woman
Regard marriage as the only place where sexual relationships should take place and as a sacred contract between only a man and woman
Qu’ran (7:80) Homosexuality transgresses people
Adultery - Christian views
Believe it is wrong
Marriage is sexually exclusive and should not be shared with anyone else
Ten commandments: Do not commit adultery
Marriage is a sacrement - a gift from God
Adultry goes against this and destroys the special relationship between and husband and wife.
It can harm the family relationships and cause the partner to feel betrayed
