RPD Connectors Flashcards
What is meant by the term ‘major connector’?
Part of the denture that connects components on one side of the arch to components on the other side of the arch
What are the properties of an ideal MAJOR connector?
- Rigid
- Doesn’t cover gingival margin
- Comfortable
- Minimal coverage with consistent rigidity
What are the types of MAXILLARY major connectors?
CoCr & ACRYLIC
- Anterior palatal strap
- Mid-palatal strap
- Posterior palatal strap
- Anteroposterior strap/bar (ring); ONLY CoCr
- Horseshoe
- Full palatal coverage
ACRYLIC
- Spoon
- Modified spoon (extension onto palatal surfaces of teeth w/ wrought wires, Adam clasps, hooks etc.)
- Every (spoon with distal stops)
What are the types of MANDIBULAR major connectors?
CoCr
- Lingual bar
- Lingual plate
- Dental bar
- Labial bar
What is the default major connector of choice for a lower RPD design?
And what are the requirements?
What are the alternative?
Lingual bar
- 3mm from gingival margin
- 4mm connector height
- 1mm above functional depth FOM
- 2mm thick
==> At least 8mm availble space in total
if not -> sub-lingual bar (but will be thicker 4mm
What is a meant by the term ‘minor connector’?
Part of the denture that connects components to the major connector (e.g. rests)
Transfers functional stresses to and from abutment teeth
What are the properties of an ideal MINOR connector?
- Rigid
- Finish above survey line
- Cross gingival margin at right angles (large enough angle to easily clean)
- Cover as little gingival margin as possible
