How do you test for alcohols?
+ Small piece of sodium
Alcohol = white precip and effervescence
How do you distinguish between different alcohol types?
Heat under reflux
+ Acidified Potassium Dichromate
1 + 2 = Orange -> Green
3 = Stays Orange
How do you test for an aldehyde?
+ Tollen’s Reagent
Aldehyde = Silver Mirror
How do you test for an alkene?
+ Bromine Water
Alkene = Orange -> Decolourise
How do you test for a carboxylic acid?
+ Sodium Carbonate
Carboxylic Acid = CO2 given off
How do you test for a haloalkane?
+ NaOH
+ Nitric Acid and Silver Nitrate
Haloalkane = Precip Forms
What colour precipitate does chloride ions form?
White
What colour precipitate does bromide ions form?
Cream
What colour precipitate does Iodide ions form?
Yellow
