Q

What three things can we do to improve our guess as to where she is in the cycle?

A
  1. history e.g. calving dates and oestrus dates.
  2. Manual palpation e.g. uterine tone
  3. Vaginal exam - mucus, blood

17
Q

How long is the follicular phase?

A

6 days

18
Q

Whereabouts in the 15 days is the cow least receptive to PGs?

A

Towards the end of the 25 days.

19
Q

What are the three vaginal mucosal stages during oestrus?

A
  1. Mucus increasing
  2. Copious amounts of clear mucus (in middle of oestrus)
  3. Mucus decreasing, often blood stained. no large follicles present.
20
Q

When progesterone dominants, what will not be produced?

A

Mucus.

21
Q

What does the CL produce?

A

Progesteron

22
Q

What does the administration of GnRH lead to?

A

LG surge and leuteinisation of follicles or ovulation.

23
Q

What else does GnRH injection stimulate the release of?

A

Small amounts of FSH, but tiny in comparison.

24
Q

What is a PRID?

A

Progesterone releasing intravagainal Exam

25
Q

What is it acting as?

A

A temporary corpus luteum

26
Q

How long do you keep the PRID in the cow?

A

7-11 days

27
Q

When the PRID is removed, when does the cow then come into oestrus?

A

2-4 days later.

28
Q

How long is the license of the PRID?

A

7 days

29
Q

What does removal of the PRID mimic?

A

Luteolysis

30
Q

What do CL’s look like on ultrasound?

A

A ball of tissue

31
Q

What do follicles look like on ultrasond?

A

A ball of fluid

32
Q

What is the difference between endometritis and metritis and which is more worrying?

A

Endometritis is when the lining of the uterus is inflammed and infected - this discharge smells horrible and is yellow in colour.
Metritis is inflammation and infection of the whole uterus - this is very serious and the cow can die!

33
Q

What is a pyometra?

A

This is an infection of the uterus and there can be no discharge at all (due to closed cervix), but upon ultrasound, can see pus build-up.

34
Q

Why might a CL be persistent?

A

A damaged endometrium might mean cows cannot produce enough PGs to luteulyse the CL.

35
Q

Is a damaged endometrium self-curing?

A

Often, cows will self cure when they enter oestrus.

36
Q

If there is a persistent CL, what is the problem with this?

A

High progesterone means the uterus is not very good at cleaning out therefore more infection.

37
Q

What things during oestrus mean the uterus is cleaned out?

A

The cervix opens, increased blood and mucus flow, squeezing of the uterus, increased blood supply to the area therefore increased inflammation to clear the infection with inflammatory cells.

38
Q

What would you administer a sick cow?

A

Parenteral antibiotics

39
Q

What would you administer a cow with whites and no CL?

A

Intrauterine antibiotics

40
Q

what would you administer a cow with whites and a CL?

A

Prostaglandins to bring her into oestrus.

41
Q

If you give prostaglandins to a cow, within how many hours do they abort?

A

Within 48 hours.
