  1. Physical and chemical properties of the drug
  2. Site of action – is a local or systemic effect required?
  3. Rate of drug absorption from different body sites
  4. Impact of gastrointestinal enzymes / liver metabolism on the drug?
  5. State of the patient – are they conscious or unable to take oral drugs?
