Routes of Administration II Flashcards
When do oral drugs work?
If it survives stomach acid, enzyme attack, absorption across GI membrane, survive liver
What types of chemical modifications cause a drug to become inactive?
Ester hydrolysis, low pH catalysis, ester breakage
What type of delivery can be obtained by oral ROA?
Systemic or local delivery
Where does oral drug delivery travel?
Passage through stomach and intestine
Pyloric sphincter tightens at base of stomach so drug stays until broken down
How do oral drugs travel through the body?
Gastric emptying, eating, peristaltic movement of GI - Motility
What does oral drug delivery provide?
Many barriers for drug absorption eg mucus and SI walls
What types of transport occur for oral delivery?
Passive, carrier-mediated and specialised absorption
What are the advantages of oral drug delivery?
Common, accepted, safe
Economical (cheap)
Self-administration
Slow release for extension
