Oral Route
Taken in the mouth, usually slow because of the first past effect.
Sublingual Route
Under the tongue, it is quicker than oral.
Buccal Route
Between the cheek and gums.
Rectal Route
Into the rectum, usually a suppository or enema
Vaginal Route
Into the vagina; usually a cream, suppository, or vaginal ring.
Ocular Route
In the eye, usually drops or ointments
Otic Route
In the ear; eye drops can be used in the ear, however, ear drops can’t be in the eye.
Nasal Route
Through the nose, usually an aerosol/spray
Inhalation Route
Inhaled in the lungs; nebulized means it’s like a mist, aerosolized is just a regular gas propellant.
Topical Route
Externally to the skin; usually creams, gens, lotions, ointments, or pastes.
Transdermal Route
Diffused through the skin, usually diffused across the skin to blood supply
Intramuscular Route
Injected into the muscle, a liquid
Subcutaneous Route
Injected under the skin
Intravenous Route
Injected directly into the veins, this is the quickest route.
Intrathecal Route
Injected around the spinal cord in the spinal canal, it’s for anesthetics to numb the body, as well as antibiotics.
