rotational motion and astrophysics Flashcards
centripetal force
is directed towards the centre of the circle of rotation
moment of inirtia
defined as an objects resistance to angular acceleration about a given axis
conservation of motion
total angular momentum before impact will equal the total moment after excluding external torque
what is gravitational potential
is the point in space that is defined as the work done in moving a unit mass from infinity to that point
escape velocity
is defined as the minimum velocity required to allow a mass to escape a gravitational field to infinity where the mass achieves zero kinetic energy and maximum (0) protentional energy
inertial frame of reference
one which the velocity of the coordinate system is constant or zero
non-inertial frame of reference
its where there coordinate system is accelerating
this means its changing speed or changing direction by travelling in a curved path
the equivalence principle
states that the effects of gravity are exactly equivalent to the effects of acceleration
geodestic
the path with the shortest distance between two points
event horizon
is the boundry of a black hole
since a black hole has a large enough gravitational pull that nothing can esacape it
black body radiation
refers to the energy emitted from a black or non-reflective body
schwarzchild radius
is the distance from its centre to its event horizon
luminosity
total amount of energy emitted by an astronomical object per unit of time
