Rota Virus Flashcards
Rota virus
Major cause of infantile diarrhea
Family Reoviridae
Virion- Icosahedral, Double capsid shell
Spoke grouped around the hub of the wheel
Genome- Double stranded RNA, segmented
Genetic reassortment
Nine structural pr core pr contains several enzymes
Group A rota virus-endemic severe diarrhea in infants and young children world wide
B-outbreak in china
C-sporadic and occasional outbreak
Pathogenesis of rota virus
Fecal oral route
Infects cells in villi of small intestine
Mutiply in enterocyte cytoplasm and damage their transport system
Diarrhea due to impaired glucose and sodium reabsorption
Typical symptoms-watery diarrhea frver abdominal pain vomitting dehydration
Incubation period 1-3 days
Secretory IgA gives important protection but does not prevent reinfection
Prevention of rota virus
Oral live attenuated penta valent human bovine reassortment
Oral live attenuated monovalent human rota virus vaccine (Rotarix)
