Death and Poverty in Victorian England
Deaths occurred more frequently because of poor public health and disease spreading ( it could spread easily as industrial revolution attracted people into the cities and factories took a lot of land - overcrowded.
Poverty had a high % - work houses were set up by the church/council to tackle this but the conditions were atrocious and people were payed little (even children had to work).
Describe Victorian England in terms of women and religion.
women were seen as inferior to men - expected to stay in the house and care for children. Country was religious and Catholicism started to become accepted again.

What was she encouraged to do at a young age?
She was educated at home like most women = studied religious works , fairy tales and novel.
her artistic family encouraged her to develop artistic talents.

Rossetti was born into an artistic family,
Brother = Dante Gabriel Rossetti- pre-raphelite painter and poet.
Father = poet
She was exposed to art and all forms from a young age, and was privileged with her education more than others in this way.

became interested in Anglo-Catholicism.
She suffered a nervous breakdown and had depression through her life.

Concerned with the welfare of women coming back from prostitution, reference to Mary Magdalene and predominately seen in ‘Goblin Market’

Part of it because it was the only way her views would be taken seriously - as women in those ages needed to have the approval of a man.
PRB literature mainly focused on literature and religious characters, mood >rather than the story, female beauty and sexual anticipation, she wrote poetry in direct contrast to some of the art work (destroys idea of painting of Damozel in ‘song’)
