Ross River Virus Flashcards
1
Q
Cause
A
small encapsulated single-strand RNA alphavirus
2
Q
Distribution
A
Endemic to Australia, Papua New Guinea and other islands in the South Pacific.
3
Q
Transmission
A
Indirect transmission of diseases can also occur through vectors, such as mosquitoes. These insects can carry pathogens from one vertebrate host to another when they feed and then inject the pathogen into the bloodstream of the new host
Zoonotic disease
4
Q
Life cycle
A
- Virus lands of cell surface and is engulfed by cell membrane
- Viral core is released into the cell
- RNA is released, instructing the cell to make new viral RNA and proteins
- New viral surface proteins are synthesized
- New viral components collect at cell membrane and new virus particle buds from the cell membrane
5
Q
Impact on Host
A
- Fever
- Chills
- Muscle aches
- Rash
- Fatigue
- Aching tendons
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Headache
- Joint pain, swelling and stiffness
6
Q
Treatment
A
- There is no cure for Ross River virus, but pain relief medicines can help control your symptoms.
- Currently no vaccines.
7
Q
Prevention/control
A
The best way to prevent Ross River virus is to avoid mosquito bites.
Insect repellent, mosquito net, long sleeved clothing etc.
