Clinical features of roseola
A
- Fever
- 90% have only fever and irritability
- Sudden
- High fever for 3-5 days in an otherwise well child
- Rash - exanthem subitum:
- ONLY AFTER FEVER RESOLVES - “defervescence”
- “surprise rash”
- represents clearing of infection
- Neck and trunk
- face and extremities
- Blanching macular or maculopapular
- Lasts for 1-2 days
• Other: lethargy, poor feeding, other viral Sx

Mx of roseola
A
- Educate: self-limiting
- Bed rest, fluids
- Stay away from school/creche until rash subsides
- Prevention: good handwashing + drying, don’t share utensils
- No vax

What is roseola often associated with?
A
• Highly associated with febrile convulsions

What should you note about when a roseola case is infectious?
A
• Infectious before Sx - once have Sx no longer contagious!
