- nose, cheeks, forehead
- flushing is often first sx
- telangectasia common
later -> persistent erythema with papules + pustules
rhinophyma (late)
ocular involvement = blepharitis
different types of rosacea
predominantly erythema/flushing
mild-mod papules +/- pustules
mod-severe papules +/- pustules
management of predominantly erythema/flushing (no/ not much telangiectasia)
topical brimonidine gel
- used as required
- reduces redness within 30 mins
- short term, redness returns to baseline
management of mild-mod rosacea
topical invermectin
management of mod-severe rosacea
combo of topical invermectin + oral doxycyline
skin manifestations of SLE
photosensitive butterfly rash
discoid lupus
alopecia
livedo reticularis - net-like rash
key difference between SLE rash and rosacea
SLE typically has nasolabial sparing
discoid lupus erythematous
benign disorder characterised by follicular keratin plugs + is thought to be autoimmune
- seen in younger females
- rarely progresses to SLE <5%
features of discoid lupus erythematosus
erythematous, raised rash, sometimes scaly
- may be photosensitive
more common on face, neck, ears + scalp
lesions heal with;
- atrophy
- scarring - may cause scarring alopecia
- pigmentation
management of discoid lupus erythematosus
topical steroid cream
2nd line = oral antimalarial hydroxychloroquine
avoid sun exxposure
