Root resorption Flashcards
Root resorption in layman term
Loss of tooth structure in the root area.
the cells eat away and dissolve tooth structure
cells responsible for the resorption?
odontoclast
osteoclast
Root resorption can be classified into
External or internal
What causes External RR?
How do you fix external tooth resorption?
Inflammatory lesions (resorption)
Reimplanted teeth (ankylosis)
tumors, cysts, impacted teeth
Excessive occlusal or mechanical forces
How to manage the External RR?
Management:
- If the nerve is not affected → Debridement of the external part and filling
- If nerve is affected or it is the cause → Removal of the nerve by Root canal treatment
- or do nothing = Observation
What causes internal root resorption?
Unclear
Trauma
Caries
Periodontal infections
Heat generated during restorative procedures
Calcium hydroxide
Cracked teeth
Idiopathic
Pulp condition in Internal Resorption
Pulp is vital ( although not totally) = Pulp electric test positive
extensive resorption of coronal pulp may result in….., caused by
a pink or red discoloration
caused by granulomatous tissue of inflammation
why CBCT is mandatory in diagnosis of Internal RR
extensive and often perforate
Radiographic Features of Internal Root Resorption
. In internal resorption, the outline of the canal is often distorted
Widening of root canal
Balloon of root canal
Can a tooth with internal resorption be saved?
Restorable = The treatment of choice for IRR is root canal therapy, which removes the blood supply and granulation tissue
Unrestorable ?
how to differentiate Internal and External on radiograph?
the outline of canal is intact or not
“So please bear with me as I go over your medical and dentall questionnaire one more time.”
“Vì vậy, xin hãy kiên nhẫn với tôi khi tô xem qua
How serious is root resorption?
What happens if tooth resorption is left untreated?
Whether it’s internal or external, the condition can lead to tooth loss if not treated early
What is the prognosis for internal root resorption?
If the condition is discovered before the root is perforated, the success rate for root canal therapy is fairly high
