Q

The ‘Rooster strut’ is one of many motif movements in Rooster. Describe it.

A

A stylised walk for the men in which the toes of one foot slide along the floor, the head and neck jut forward, and the rest of the dancer’s body is pulled towards the outstretched extremities. The walk self-evidently mimics the way in which cockerels move.

Q

Little Red Rooster Blues Number:

Where are the dancers staged at the end of the routine?

A

At the end of the section the full company comes onto the stage, walking in very deliberate paths either parallel to or at right angles to the front of the stage so that the work ends with eight dancers lined up at the back with one couple downstage in the centre.

How are the dancers placed for this routine?

A

Into five couples

There is one main couple and although the full company is on stage, for most of the time the other four couples move in a contemporary social dance at the back or side of the stage from which some of them emerge briefly.
