Sherman Anti-Trust Act
The Sherman act allowed the United States government to investigate a business to look for “artificial raising of prices” or a monopoly.
Clayton Anti-Trust Act
In 1914, 24 years after the Sherman Act, the Clayton Act looked into price discrimination and price fixing. The goal was to make sure no one corporation has an unfair advantage-they cannot corner the market to drive anyone out.
The 19th Amendment
In 1920, women finally received the right to vote after a 70 year struggle due to President Woodrow Wilson.
Social darwinism
The belief that all humans are subject to the same laws of natural selection. As a result, “the strong will survive.”
Laissez-Faire
When the government stays out of business affairs and allows the strong to win out.
1902 Coal Mining Strike
In 1902, the miners went on strike, which was a big deal because coal was a widely used resource and they couldn’t go without it. The owners of the mines quickly turned to president Theodore Roosevelt to send the works back to the mines. Instead, Roosevelt gave the workers a 10% raise. It was the first time the president had sided with the workers.
Trust Busting
Roosevelt made it his mission to end the corruption of big business in the U.S. During his time in office, Roosevelt went after 44 “trusts” or corporations that he felt were hurting the American economy.
Interstate Commerce Act (1887)
Set guidelines and restrictions to the railroads.
Big Stick Diplomacy
The plan to beef up the U.S military power to the point where no country would want to take on america in a fight.
Muckrakers
Investigative journalists used to be referred to as muckrakers.
The Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act
Set requirements for expiration dates and for business to provide a label of all ingredients in their products.
Dollar Diplomacy
The concept behind dollar diplomacy is to create markets for American products to be sold in other nations. The target of Taft’s Dollar Diplomacy was in Central America - especially Venezuela and Cuba.
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine had already stated to European nations that they were not to enter Latin America for any self-gain. The overall goal of Dollar Diplomacy was to create stronger, more stable, nations in Central America which would help promote American business.
