1902 Coal Mining Strike

A

In 1902, the miners went on strike, which was a big deal because coal was a widely used resource and they couldn’t go without it. The owners of the mines quickly turned to president Theodore Roosevelt to send the works back to the mines. Instead, Roosevelt gave the workers a 10% raise. It was the first time the president had sided with the workers.

On December 10, 1898, both sides of the Spanish American war met in Paris to sort out the end of the conflict. The Treaty of Paris was agreed upon.This transferred ownership of Puerto Rico and Guam from Spain to the U.S. In addition, the U.S gave Spain $20 million for the rights to the Philippine islands. Cuba was granted its full independence.
