Slope (Faucets)
Measured by Pitch; steepness of the roof
Eave
Horizontal edge of the roof located at the bottom where the gutters sit
Rake or Rake Edge
Pitched/Sloped Edge of the roof
Gable
When 2 Rakes/Rake Edges meet that form a triangle
Rafter Tail
Part of the frame that overhangs
Fascia
Part of the roof that the gutters attach
Soffitt
Woven Valley (Slope)
No-Cut Valleys (Slope)
Open Valley w/W-shaped Flashing
Rafter
Support Beam/Frame of the Roof
Roof Decking or Sheathing
Structural component (plywood) covering the Truces/Rafters underneath the under-lament that hold the Shingles
Pipe Boot Flashing or Pipe Jack
Used to seal off round pipes (PVC) that come out of the roof.
Step Flashing
Used to flash anywhere the roof meets a wall, chimney, or skylight.
Counter Flashing
Drip Edge Flashing
Approx 1” lip placed under the Rake Edge allowing the shingles to slightly extend over the edge of the roof to prevent moisture from driving rain
Gutter Apron
Located on the Eave Edges, it overlaps the back edge of the gutter forcing the water in the gutter
Ice & Water Shield
Sits on your Eave Edge, 1 1/2 - 2 rows sticking to bare Roof Sheathing/Decking.
Synthetic Underlayment
Layer on top of the Roof Sheathing/Decking not covered by the Ice & Water Shield. Doesn’t go along the edge or in the valleys.

Places on top of a Ridge covered by Ridge Cap Shingles

When 2 slopes join together (outward) covered by ridge cap shingles
