Rood Approach Flashcards
Basic assumptions of Rood Approach
Normal muscle tones is a prerequisite to movement
Treatment begins at developmental level of functioning
Motivation enhances purposeful movement
Repetition is necessary for re-education of muscular responses
Ontogenic Movement pattern
Patient is put through specific sequence
Supine withdrawal
Total flexion response toward navel
Roll over (toward side lying)
Arm and leg flex on same side of body
Pivot prone
Demands FROM of extension of neck, shoulders, truck, and LE
Neck Co-Contraction
Develops head control and stability of neck
On elbows (prone on elbows)
Weight bearing on elbows
All fours
Develops stability of lower trunk and legs
Static standing
Frees UE for pretension and manipulation
Walking
Unites skill, mobility, and stability
Foundation of voluntary acts
Reflexes
Principles of treatment:
Reflexes can be used to assist or retard effects of sensory stimulation
Sensory stimulation of receptors can produce predictable responses
Muscles have different duties
Heavy work muscles should be integrated before light work muscles
Light work
Flexors and adductors
Heavy work
Extensors and abductors
Facilitated contraction at the joint undergoing compression
Heavy joint compression
