Romeo Juliet quotes Flashcards

Q

Here’s much to do with hate but more with love.
Why then, O brawling love, O loving hate,
O anything of nothing first created!
O heavy lightness, serious vanity,
Misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms!
Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health,
Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is!

A

Oxymoron+antithesis+juxtaposition. Act 1 scene 1
Romeo uses oxymorons to signify that he is feeling both emotions-love and hate-at the same time to show that in unrequited love both can be bred, an intense love for one but also a self-loathing hate. Emphasises the duality of love and hate, to show the ambiguous feelings of Romeo. Feather of lead also links to when he talks about having a “soul of lead”(Act 4 Scene 4). Further emphasises his melancholic feelings due to Rosaline
