Anaphora
the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses- DO YOU ever feel like a plastic bag……DO YOU ever feel, feel so paper thin…..(there was two definitions for this but I chose the more legit one😁)
Apostrophe
A writer or a speaker, using an apostrophe, detaches himself from the reality and addresses an imaginary character in his speech- Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.”
Assonance
Assonance takes place when two or more words close to one another repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sounds-
“MEn sEll the wEdding bElls.”
Blank Verse
a literary device defined as un-rhyming verse written in iambic pentameter- Something there is that doesn’t love a wall.
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
(I don’t understand this one)
Dramatic Monologue
a poem in the form of a speech or narrative by an imagined person, in which the speaker inadvertently reveals aspects of their character while describing a particular situation or series of events- soft, what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east and Juliet is the sun!- he is revealing his thoughts to the audience as a monologue
Hyperbole
over exaggerating something- I weigh a million pounds.
Imagery
to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses- was dark and dim in the forest. – The words “dark” and “dim” are visual images.
Soliloquy
a speech that a character makes in a work of drama only to him or herself- (don’t understand this one either)
Alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words- Sally sells shells by the seashore
Dramatic Irony
is when the words and actions of the characters of a work of literature have a different meaning for the reader than they do for the characters.
