  2. Romeo used this to describe his relationship with the person that he loved: Rosaline. He said that he represented Cupid (the god of love because he was so in love with Rosaline) and Rosaline represented Diania (the goddess of chastity who was opposed to love and marriage.
  3. It is used so that the reader has more context to the situation and can better understand what the author is trying to convey.

  2. This was used when Friar was speaking to himself:
    “The Earth that’s nature’s mother is her tomb; / What is her burying grave, that is her womb; And from her womb children of divers kind / We sucking on her natural bosom find, / Many for many virtues excellent, / None but for some, and yet all different” (II, 3, 9-14).
    These lines are talking about humans using mother nature/earth natural gifts. The paradox shown is: the grave that the Earth buries her dead in is also her womb to create more.
  3. It is used to make the reader think more deeply about the text that they are reading.
