Tragedy (Greek)
A Greek theatrical performance in which the theme is very sad.
Tragic Protagonists
A hero in a tragedy, usually the main character.
Antagonist
Villain of the story.
Extended Metaphor
A metaphor used to go on for a long time, most likely to convey the depth of one’s emotion.
Soliloquy
Speaking to oneself without anyone else hearing, whether accompanied or not.
Aside
A piece of dialogue heard only by the audience, not fellow characters.
Hubris
Extreme cockiness or self-esteem.
Hamartia
A big mistake, which seals the fate of the hero.
Catharsis
A way to escape from feelings deep inside of oneself.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows something that the character doesn’t.
Monologue
Dialogue performed at the start of the performance, usually for exposition.
Unrequited Love
A one-sided affection.
Courtly Love
A love used in a chivalrous manner; the male goes after and woos the woman.
Volatile
To change very suddenly, usually in a bad way.
Emotional
To experience feelings, usually to do with sadness.
Impetuous
To do something quickly and carelessly.
Machismo
Strong misogynistic self-absorption.
Antithesis
Being the polar opposite of something .
Iambic Pentameter
Usually a poetic phrase, in which is kept in a certain rhythm.
Sonnet
A piece of poetry consisting of fourteen lines, written in Iambic Pentameter.
Shared Lines
When multiple characters share a line of verse.
Rhyming Couplet
A pair of rhyming lines, usually containing the same number of syllables.
Protagonist
The hero of the story.
Prose
To speak without rhythm or structure.
Verse
A section of a piece, in poetry or song.
Fate
How something inevitably turns out in the end.
Free Will
To do something of your own chocie and consent.
Honour
Doing something morally correct.
Society
The structure of people going living life comunally, interconnected.
Patriarchy
A system in which males are the superior gender, and take control over their women.
Primogeniture
Rights and inheritance of which come with the importance of being the first-born-child.
Feud
A lengthy fight or hatred between parties.
Reputation
The beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something.
Mercurial
Subject to sudden or unpredictable changes of mood or mind.
Patriarchy
A system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
Anarchic
Unruly and chaotic.
Impulsive
Someone who acts on a whim, without thinking.
Tempestuous
Someone who is unpredictable and has many conflicting emotions.
Liberal
Willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one’s own; open to new ideas.
Social Class
Social class, also called class, a group of people within a society who possess the same socioeconomic status.
Contemporary
Living or occurring at the same time.
Quixotic
Extremely idealistic: unrealistic and impractical.
Melancholic
A feeling of sadness, typically with no obvious cause.
Masculinity
Qualities or attributes regarded as characteristic of men.
Challenging Conventions
Going against what is perceived as the norm.
Ingenuous
(Of a person or action) innocent and unsuspecting.
