Romeo and Juliet Quotes Flashcards
Romeo, A1S1
Troubled/conflicted
might want to relook at these
Romeo: “Where shall we dine? O me, what fray was here?”
(recent entry to scene, does not immediately notice traces of violence - - >mind is occupied)
Romeo: “brawling love”, “loving hate”, “heavy lightness”, “serious vanity”
(after noticing scene, links it back to love)
Oxymoron: confusion, unsure what love is
Romeo: “A choking gall, and a preserving sweet”
(still views on love)
Contrast
Romeo, A1S1
Stubborn, fixated
Romeo: “O she is rich in beauty, only poor that, when she dies, with beauty dies her store” (Romeo ‘looks up’ to her despite rejection)
Romeo: “She is too fair, too wise; wisely too fair” (diction of ‘too’ empasises her good qualities, repetition of “wise” and “fair”, shows a loop, limited perspectives)
Romeo: “O teach me how I should forget to think” –> Thou canst not teach me to forget”
(Despite practical advice by Benvolio–> “examine other beauties”, Romeo’s opinions remained unchanged)
Romeo, A2S2
Romantic
Romeo: “Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, having some business, do entreat her eyes, to twinkle in their spheres till they return”
(ie In the darkness of the night, all he sees is Juliet; metaphor of eyes as “stars”+dreamy tone; celestial imagery–> awe, reverance)
Romeo: “By love that did prompt me first to inquire, he lent me counsel, and I lent him eyes. I am no pilot, yet were thou as far as that vast shore washed with the farthest sea, I should adventure for such merchandise” (ie, go a long distance for Juliet; alliteration of ‘s’ sound in “vast, shore, washed, sea’, drag out sound, long distance; personification of himself as love)
