“My dreams presage some joyful news at hand.”
Romeo - Romeo had a happy dream and hopes it is a good sign for the future. (Presage
means to foretell.)
“Then she is well and nothing can be ill.
Her body sleeps in Capel’s monument,
And her immortal part with angels lives.”
Balthasar to Romeo - When Balthasar says Juliet is “well”, it comes from an Elizabethan
expression: “the dead are well”. Here Balthasar is telling Romeo that Juliet is dead.
“Unhappy fortune!”
Friar Laurence to Friar John - Friar Laurence says this when he learns that Friar John was
unable to give his message to Romeo. An accident of fate interfered with their plans. (This is
an example of an oxymoron.)
“O true apothecary!
Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.”
Romeo – His last lines before he dies. (Quick also means “living”, this is an example of a pun.)
“Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger.
This is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die.”
Juliet - Her last words before she stabs herself and dies. She is telling the knife it belongs in
her, forever.
“See what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!”
The Prince to Capulet and Montague - Since the families did not have the sense to end their feud, heaven has provided a solution for them, at a price (their children’s lives). They have all been punished for their actions.
“For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”
Prince Escalus - Last lines of the play. He is saying that there was never a sadder story than this one.
